Best Virtual Mailbox for Nomads and Expats

When you live abroad or move every month, the costs that matter are scans, international forwarding and storage limits, not the headline price. Here's what to compare, with providers' published details.

What to compare

Six things that decide the real cost

Content scans
Envelope photos are usually included; opening and scanning the inside often costs extra. iPostal1 lists $2.25 for up to 10 pages; PostScanMail lists $2.00 per extra open and scan.
International forwarding
You pay postage plus a handling fee. iPostal1 notes international shipping isn't available at every location, so check the specific address.
Free storage
iPostal1 lists 30 days for letters; PostScanMail lists 14 days (30 on annual plans). Extended storage is billed.
Check deposit
LegalZoom Virtual Mail includes it on MailBox plans; iPostal1 offers deposit by mail at most locations for $4.95 per batch of up to 5 checks plus scans and shipping.
Form 1583 from abroad
USPS rules allow the form to be witnessed by the CMRA or a U.S.-commissioned notary in person or by real-time audio and video (DMM 508.1.8.3).
Recipients
Traveling as a couple? iPostal1 personal plans allow up to 6 recipient names; LegalZoom Starter allows 2. Extra recipients cost more elsewhere.

A simple way to choose

Estimate your mail: letters a month, how many you'd want opened, and how often you'd forward. Then price two or three providers at the actual address you'd use, since several price by location.

If you'll use the address for banks or government mail, read the CMRA rules first. Some institutions treat CMRA addresses differently from residential ones.

Questions

Common questions

Can I sign USPS Form 1583 while living abroad?

The USPS Domestic Mail Manual allows the form to be witnessed by the CMRA or acknowledged before a notary commissioned in a U.S. state or territory, in person or by real-time audio and video (DMM 508.1.8.3). Ask your provider which method it supports.

Can a virtual mailbox forward mail internationally?

Many can, at postage plus a handling fee. iPostal1 says international shipping isn't available at all locations, so check the specific mail center before you sign up.

Will a virtual mailbox address work for my U.S. bank?

It depends on the bank. Federal rules ask banks for an individual's residential or business street address, and banks set their own policies on CMRA addresses. Ask your bank before you change the address on file.
